Healing properties of gemstones
The word jewellery derives from the French word Jouel used in the 13th Century.
Jewellery is the oldest form of body adornment which was much used by the Egyptians over 4,000 years ago.
In Greece it became very popular, believing that the wearer of gemstone jewellery would protect them from “the evil eye”.
As early as 2,000 years ago, the Romans started to use emeralds and amber in their jewellery. It was around this time that roman-ruled England started to make jewellery from fossilized wood called Jet.
Napoleon Bonaparte revived the style and grandeur of jewellery and by the middle ages an abundance of gemstones was being exported from India and used by nobility around Europe. Elizabeth I and the then Queen of Spain had numerous dresses made, each weighted down with pearls and gemstones.
In ancient times and today the fascination which surrounds gemstones continues. Still today many people believe in the curative qualities of gemstones. Although gems have had various uses and meanings at different times in the course of history, they have been highly prized at all times.
