A guide to caring for your gemstone jewellery

Our jewellery should be regarded as a precious possession and we recommend you use the following guidelines to care for your jewellery and keep it in tip top condition.

Silver is a precious metal and like gold, it´s too fine to be made in a 100% form.  To make jewellery from silver a small amount (7.5%) of copper has to be added to strengthen the silver and make the jewellery durable.  This is called Sterling Silver or .925.

Guidelines and Tips

Silver can oxidize in time.  After and before use, polish it with a silver cleaning cloth.

Always protect your gemstone jewellery from blows and impacts so if you have to perform heavy work, it’s best to remove it.  It’s also advisable to remove jewellery whilst doing housework as household chemicals can damage the stones.  It’s also best to remove the jewellery when doing sports.

When using hairspray we recommend you remove earrings and pendants.

Never put your jewellery in a swimming pool or in chlorine, salt water, mineral springs or sun lotion.  Do not immerse gemstone jewellery in water or it could loosen the gemstones.

Never leave your gemstone jewellery in direct heat.

The best method of cleaning gemstone jewellery is to use a little warm soapy water and an old brush (perhaps an old toothbrush).  After cleaning, dry with a soft dry cloth.

Never use any chemical solutions on the gemstones.

To avoid the gemstones becoming scratched, never pile your jewellery on top of each other and always store your gemstone jewellery in separate sections of the jewellery box or wrap each one individually in a velvet pouch, silk or tissue paper.

Make sure you store them in a cool dry place and always wipe them with a silver cleaning cloth before and after use.

Should you not be able to take your ring off, wear plastic gloves when you are immersing your hands in water and remember to take off your gemstone jewellery before taking a bath or shower as this could loosen the gemstones.
